How long does it take to receive my refund?

Typically, it can 21 days to receive a tax refund filed electronically and 6-8 weeks if filed by mail.

Why haven't I received my tax refund?

Here are 7 reasons why you MAY have not received your refund

1. Your Return Includes Inaccurate Information

2. Your Return Is Incomplete

3. You’re a Victim of Tax Fraud

4. Your Refund Was Sent to the Wrong Bank

5. You Claimed Certain Tax Credits

Certain tax credits, including the Earned Income Credit and the Additional Child Tax Credit,

6. You Amended Your Return

7. Your Refund Has Been Offset to Pay a Debt

If you owe certain debts, including unpaid child support, unpaid state taxes, or federal student loans, the IRS can offset your refund by the balance owed. If your refund is offset, you’ll receive a notice from the Bureau of Fiscal Services advising you why your refund was taken and which agency the debt was owed to.

What if I cannot pay my owed taxes?

You should still file your taxes to avoid garnishments. If you cannot pay what you we, you can ask the IRS for an installment plan.

Should I still file past due taxes?

Yes! If you are to receive a refund, you have 3 years to claim it.

If you owe taxes, the interest and penalty charges will continue to accrue.

How long should I keep my personal tax records?

  1. Keep records for 3 years if situations (4), (5), and (6) below do not apply to you.

  2. Keep records for 3 years from the date you filed your original return or 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later, if you file a claim for credit or refund after you file your return.

  3. Keep records for 7 years if you file a claim for a loss from worthless securities or bad debt deduction.
